NaNoWriMo: Week One

Well, I'm finished with this week's NaNo. Total week count from Sunday to Saturday is:
17,979
Current count (this updates when I update, I think?):
I surprised myself!
My daily goals have been 1) hit the daily goal for NaNo (1667.7777777whatdafuckever) and 2) finish a chapter a day (my chapters are short).
Day 01: 2575
Day 02: 2780
Day 03: 1832
Day 04: 0 (I was extremely busy that day)
Day 05: 4901 (I wanted to make up the prior day - I will not be doing this again LOL)
Day 06: 3368
Day 07: 2523
This writing project is the first time I've written anything original outside of poetry and a few throwaway stories that I didn't write seriously. So far, it has been interesting - and I have learned quite a few things about myself.
For starters, I need to work on being more descriptive. This is something that I suspected anyhow, but when I find myself grasping to write anything other than dialogue I realize that it is one of my weaker areas. I suppose that - in my attempt to avoid the purple prose, my writing has become too minimalist. This is my biggest problem right here, so between writing I will be researching methods on how to do better at that.
Secondly, I should have done character sheets. I'm not used to creating original characters - and the ones I have created have been background characters inserted solely for the lulz (Herschel, anyone?). I am not pleased with the names. I wanted names for my main characters that were obviously ethnic but I am unhappy with my choices (why yes, the whole thing is about black characters. I've always felt bad about being a black person in fandom and not having black characters that were interesting and not filled with a bunch of failtastical stereotypes and one-dimensional portrayals that I could write about. Long run-on sentence is long.).
I also should have done more plotting, but I've found myself discarding many things and adding so much that maybe that wasn't a bad thing after all.
All in all, it's been a fun week so far. I haven't pushed myself too much, and I have set limits. For example, instead of playing Tropico like I want to (the old one - I still love that game so very much. One of these days I'm going to get a new computer that's able to run the new one. One of these days...) I wrote chapter 7.
I'll post an update next week! ♥
